Newsletter 163: A Personal Journey with Dyslexia: Celebrating Makena's 12th Birthday
🧠The Power of Lateral Thinking
Today is a special day. It's my daughter Makena's 12th birthday, and I find myself reflecting on our shared journey with dyslexia. This personal story is not just about celebrating a birthday, but also about how dyslexia has shaped my life and the mission of Dyslexic AI.
The Catalyst of Change: Makena's Dyslexia
Makena's dyslexia has been a significant turning point in my life. It was through her experiences that I began to understand my own neurodivergent thinking. This realization has not only made me more self-aware but also ignited a passion within me to help others with similar experiences. It's a journey that has led me to become a public advocate for dyslexia through Dyslexic AI.
The Power of Lateral Thinking
Our journey with dyslexia has taught me the immense value of lateral thinking. This unique way of thinking, often associated with dyslexia, has been credited by successful individuals like Jeff Bezos for their innovative solutions and breakthroughs. It's a skill that I believe can lead to success, and it's one that I want to help others harness.
The Urgency for Early Diagnosis and Intervention
Through Makena, I've come to understand the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. It's alarming that girls are typically diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, or other neurodivergent conditions around the age of 13. This late diagnosis is unacceptable, and it's a situation I'm committed to changing. I believe AI can play a crucial role in improving the assessment process and ensuring no child slips through the cracks.
The Mission of Dyslexic AI: A Personal Commitment
My personal experiences have shaped the mission of Dyslexic AI. We're committed to helping dyslexic professionals in their careers and preparing the next generation with necessary skills. We aim to promote the understanding that lateral thinking skills are valuable and can lead to success.
A Special Birthday Message
As we celebrate Makena's birthday, I want to express my deepest gratitude to her. She has been my inspiration and has helped me understand myself better. I am excited to see her grow up in a world that embraces her unique thinking style. Happy birthday, Makena!
Thank you for allowing me to share this personal story. Your support means the world to us.
